Re: Immediate Referral of the Interlochen Center for the Arts Sexual Abuse Case to the Michigan Attorney General's Office
On July 29, 2026, Interlochen Center for the Arts released the findings of an independent investigation documenting 70 former students who allege systemic sexual abuse by 47 adults, including faculty, counselors, administrators, board members, and Jeffrey Epstein, spanning seven decades. That report has been delivered to your office.
We are calling on you to immediately refer this case to the Michigan Attorney General's Office.
Public confidence in your office's handling of child sexual abuse cases is already severely eroded due to a plea deal you made in the case of a 4-year-old child, abused by her father and given an STD, which resulted in her abuser serving less than one year in jail.
Your office has also placed your own capacity crisis on public record. In July 2025, you told Grand Traverse County commissioners that your office is "reaching a crisis point." You noted that your Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney alone was carrying 208 open felony cases, far above the state standard of 150, and that your office has had situations where "we have more courtrooms running than we have attorneys able to be present."
A case involving 47 accused individuals, 70 survivors spanning seven decades, and across state or possibly even international lines, cannot be given the attention it deserves by an office already unable to keep up with its current load. The Michigan Attorney General's Office has dedicated special victims units with experienced Criminal Sexual Conduct attorneys and a proven track record of prosecuting systemic abuse cases at this scale.
Seventy people bravely came forward in this investigation. They deserve a prosecution commensurate with that courage, and they deserve justice. Refer this case now.

Three reasons this investigation demands a different kind of prosecutor.

The July 29, 2026 investigation found 70 former students alleging abuse by 47 adults, including faculty, staff, board members, and Jeffrey Epstein, spanning seven decades. No county prosecutor's office should be expected to absorb a case of this magnitude alone.
ON RECORD
In July 2025, Prosecutor Moeggenberg's office described itself as "reaching a crisis point," with her Chief Assistant carrying 208 open felony cases against a state standard of 150. That same office accepted a plea deal in a child sex abuse case, in which a four-year-old was victimized by her father, that resulted in less than one year in jail.
EXPERIENCE
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office has special victims units with a proven track record, including the Catholic Church abuse investigation, the Larry Nassar case, and the Boy Scouts of America. This is exactly the kind of institutional abuse case those units exist to prosecute.
A referral is not an admission of failure. It is the right tool for the right case.
